Menu Changes in the Cafeteria

TO:             Parents
FROM:       Kit Hines, Child Nutrition Director
DATE:        March 13, 2013

SUBJECT:  Menu Changes

This year Child Nutrition was required to change to new meal patterns for all reimbursable meals served.  These new meal patterns required that we change what we offer to students on a daily basis at lunch.  Child Nutrition is now required to offer two vegetables and one fruit serving on the line before the cashier stand.  In addition to the offering of these items, each student must have either one fruit or one vegetable on their tray.  We have determined at this point in the school year that we can no longer continue to offer the garden bar with the additional fruits and vegetables for students due to cost constraints.  Effective Monday, March 25th, the garden bar will no longer be available as part of the lunch meal service.

During the month of April for testing, we will offer an additional fruit or vegetable on the serving line at the elementary level.  This will be the A to Z promotion which features a fruit or vegetable each day starting with a letter of the alphabet.  Many of the fruits and vegetables featured will be brain foods such as apples, berries and spring mix.  In addition to these promotional items, regular menu items that are brain foods include whole grains and broccoli.

We will also reduce the number of entrees at the Elementary level to three, offering two hot entrees every day and either a cold sandwich or salad daily.

As funding decreases and costs increase, we need to continually identify opportunities for cost savings.

Thank you for your support.  If you have any questions you can contact me at hineski@tulsaschools.org or 918 833-8676.
